Huge thanks to all who contributed in any way to our “Night at the Dogs and Fittest Family Run” last Saturday in Thurles Greyhound Stadium. First off thanks to all our runners and families who were brave enough to run a lap each of the greyhound track in a relay race and so kindly gave up their time to take part. Secondly thanks so much to all who purchased tickets for the event and contributed to the auction on the night, its your generous contribution that makes an event like last Saturday night such a success. Thirdly thanks to Thurles greyhound track staff for their facilities and also to our hard working committee and their families for their efforts to ensure the night was a great success. Finally well done to all the competitors The Greenes, The Grants, The Gleesons, The Ryans of the Line, The Harrington-Pamplins, The Ryan Farmers, The O Dwyer-Quinlans, The Ryan Giants, The Shanahans and The Shortt-Bourkes.. you were all winners for taking part and played a big part in making the event a big success!! Fastest lady on Saturday night was Kelley Harrington and the fastest family were The Ryan Giants team of Larry, Norita and Matt. It’s two in a row for Matt who was the fastest man in last years event! Once again many thanks to all concerned for making the night a huge success. SENIOR HURLING

Our quest for a first mid title continues after an agonizing 1 point defeat to county champions Thurles Sarsfelds in The Ragg last Sunday. We started the game brightly and took an early commanding lead through a goal from Loughlin Ryan. Thurles fought back hard but we still maintained a 2 point lead at half time. This was further increased when Paidi Green found the net in the 8th minute of the second half to give us a 5 point advantage. However Sarsfields struck back wirh a goal of their own and aided by bringing on subs like Lar Corbett they took a 2 point lead in the closing stages. Upperchurch battled bravely and reduced it to the minimu but unfortunately couldn’t find the equalizer. Our lads played bravely and with composure and on another day could easily have taken the game. Many thanks to the management team of John Ryan, Seamus Gleeson & John Quinn and all the players for their hard work throughout the year. Thanks also to the tremendous support who turned out.

SENIOR FOOTBALL

This Saturday the club prepares for their second ever mid senior football final and will be hoping to go one step further than last year and defeat Loughmore Castleiney. The game will throw in at 5:30pm in Littleton. Last year saw us put up a mighty challenge and we have every opportunity to leave with the cup on Saturday night. As with last Sunday all support would be greatly appreciated in Littleton. Best of luck to the lads

SENIOR HURLING

Last Saturday evening was a highlight for our senior hurlers as they dethroned last years mid champions Loughmore-Castleiney to qualify for the mid final vs Thurles Sarsfields. Upperchurch got up to the pace of the game with an early goal from Loughlin Ryan and 2 more in quick succession before half time saw us stretch our lead to 9 points at the interval. Loughmore, as expected, staged a dogged fightback in the second half and at one stage reduced the arrears to 5 points but Upperchurch showed all their grit by scoring the final 7 points of the game to prevail by 10 points 3-22 to 0-21. Fine performances throughout the field were key to this win that puts us into our 3rd mid final in the last 10 years. The final v Thurles Sarsfields takes place this Sunday evening at 6pm in The Ragg and all are encouraged to come along and support as we try to claim our first ever mid title.

SENIOR FOOTBALL
The senior football mid final against Loughmore-Castleiney has been fixed for Sat Sept 9th at 5:30pm in Littleton. After running Loughmore so close in last years final this is a great chance to go one more step and claim our first ever mid senior title. It is also a unique opportunity to join Loughmore as the only other club to win both mid senior hurling & football titles in the same year. One further note is that it took over 100 years for a team from Upperchurch Drombane to reach a senior mid final in either hurling or football but by the time the football final rolls around on the 9th we will have competed in 3 in under 12 months.

SENIOR HURLING

The senior championship games are coming thick and fast right now and last Saturday afternoon saw the hurlers face JK Brackens in the mid quarter final. After a tight opening half Upperchurch took a 1 point lead into the break. The second half though proved to be move one sided as Upperchurch outscored Brackens 1-12 to 0-5 to run out winners on a scoreline of 2-23 to 1-15. The goals came from Eoin Shortt and Matthew Greene. The semi final will take place this Saturday at 6pm in The Ragg against Loughmore-Castleiney. All support is appreciated as we look to reach only our 3rd mid final. Should we win the mid final will be played on Sunday Sept 3rd

SENIOR FOOTBALL
The senior footballers put in a stellar performance against Drom & Inch last Tuesday in the mid semi final. A high quality contest saw some fine scores from both sides especially in the first 20 minutes. Drom got an early goal to race into a 4 point lead but Upperchurch battled hard and by half time had turned this into a 3 point lead, thanks in part to a Ger Grant goal. The 2nd half was lower scoring but none the less exciting and despite a fightback by Drom we managed to hold on for a 2 point victory 1-14 to 1-12. This sets us up for a mid final against Loughmore on weekend of Sept 9th. It’s a great achievement to have reached back to back mid finals straight from going up senior.

JUNIOR HURLING
The junior hurlers were defeated by Holycross/Ballycahill in their final mid group game last weekend which ends their participation in the competition.

HIDDEN TIPPERARY FUNDRAISER THIS SATURDAY
A fundraiser will take place this Saturday evening from 6pm to 9pm at Jim O The Mills in aid of the Hidden Tipperary Tourism Group which includes Upper Limits Climbing Wall and Upperchurch Walking Trails. Activities on the evening will include Duck Race, Mens, Ladies & Childrens Skittles, Bouncing Castle, Face Painting & Barbeque. All are invited to attend

UPPERCHURCH DROMBANES FASTEST FAMILY
On Saturday Sept 30th Thurles Greyhound Stadium will play host to a relay race to find our fastest family. Teams of 3 (must have a gender mix!) will compete for this prestigious title where each team member will run a lap of the track cheered on by a partisan local crowd. Have your gang got what it takes to meet this challenge? If the answer is yes then you need to do 3 things:
– find two other family members who are prepared to give it a go!
– contact any committee member to get your spot on the starting line
– get training!!
Being a fairly modern outfit, we’re open minded as to what constitutes a family but our imagination has it’s limits. Preference is for at least two direct family members (siblings / parent etc, perhaps joined by 1st cousin, in-law etc. It goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) that the organising committee’s ruling on such important matters shall be final. Participants must be 18yrs of age sometime this year to participate – you can be as old as you like but you wont be getting a head start!!
We’ll also be running the normal buster dog race on the night, auction of the relay teams , live music and loads of fun. Ticket will be ready shortly so watch this space.
This could be your clan’s moment to shine so don’t be shy and get in contact if interested in entering.
